Helping Children with SEND in Orenburg, Russia
Children and young people with special education needs may feel isolated, experience communication problems and mental health challenges.
Expressive therapies have proven to improve the quality of life for children with special education needs, helping to develop communication skills, raise self-esteem and enhance life prospects.* Studies have shown that arts activities aid both cognitive and emotional development and support healthy brain function.**
We're helping Centre 'Prikosnovenie’, a Russian charity based in Orenburg, to provide creative therapy services to children and young people with special needs and disabilities.
Orenburg has a population of over half a million people. However, the city lacks specialised support options for children and young people with special education needs. Prikosnoveniye provides a unique support service for children with special education needs in Orenburg. Prikosnoveniye is a place where children can turn to for support and social inclusion.
Thanks to our funding, 87 children and 49 young adults will be able to engage in therapeutic dance, music, clay and art activities over the next 12 months. These sessions will help to improve the mental wellbeing, communication and social interaction skills of some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the region. Centre 'Prikosnovenie’ provides a safe place where all are accepted and celebrated regardless of their ability and background.
