The dark days of World War II changed the lives of Londoners. As bombs fell, citizens took to underground shelters for cover. Children were evacuated to the countryside and women worked in factories and transport for the first time. In the West End the restaurants, theatres and nightclubs struggled to stay open during The Blitz and the grandest hotels became the most upmarket camps the world has ever seen.
